Sound mind, sound life

Today started like many other days.  Pretty normal, pretty routine.  I try to make time every morning to read my devotions.  This morning it seemed each of my devotions were teaching me similar things.  Meditate in you and your worth, have a positive outlook and attitude, and lead a holy life.  Three separate devotions, three different writers, one similar lesson.  I didn’t realize then what I know now.  There was a reason God spoke to me three different ways.  There is a reason He reiterated the same general idea.  Because He knew how challenging my day was going to be and how much I was going to need that particular lesson this morning.  It is amazing how a positive attitude, self meditation and holy living can make a terrible day not so terrible after all.

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life].” (Proverbs 18:21)  We all know that life isn’t always going to be rainbows and butterflies, sometimes it’s going to be really awful and hard.  It is how we approach and handle those moments that matter.  God is ready and willing to be a crutch when we need Him, He will be our strength when we can no longer hold our own.  It is our job to speak positively and to look on the bright side of every situation.  When we are in an argument sometimes it is best to not speak at all.  If you do speak be sure to speak kindly and to be mindful of what comes out of your mouth.  When we are speaking of problems or ailments, it is wise to speak good things over our bodies.  When we are talking about something someone did that may have bothered us, it is wise to tread softly and make what we say purposeful rather than hurtful.  If we trust God to be our strength during difficult times the least we can do is help Him by having a positive attitude, sound mind and kind words.

In order to have a sound mind and positive attitude we need to be right within ourselves.  If we are unhappy on the inside we will surely be unhappy on the outside.  If we self-loathe in our minds we will surely exude negativity.  I never realized how important it was to love myself and to take time, if even a few moments every day, to myself.  I didn’t realize the importance of self-worth and meditation until I saw it affecting every aspect of my life.  My relationships, my job, my health, my happiness were all just burdens because I, myself, was a burden.  “Meditation is simply about being yourself and knowing about who that is.  It is about coming to realize that you are on a path whether you like it or not, namely the path that is life.” (Jon Kabat-Zinn)  It may be hard to understand how important time to yourself and love for yourself really is until you take the time to experience it.  It is an everyday struggle for me and at times I still don’t make time for myself.  At times I still say negative things about myself.  I will continue to struggle.  But for every day that I struggle, there will be a day that I succeed.  All we can do is try.  Every day try to take a few or several moments to yourself.  Find a quiet place, close your eyes and meditate.  Meditate on the days ahead, on the coffee or tea you had, on your favorite flower, on a prayer, on your journal…anything that makes you happy.  A happy inside makes for a happy outside.

A sound mind and positive attitude will make holy living much easier.  “You should be a light for other people.  Live so that they will see the good things you do and will praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)  At times the world we live in can be a harsh one.  The only thing we have complete control over is ourselves.  If you want to leave a positive mark on the world try living holy.  Be kind, be positive, be obedient, be respectful, be honest, be loyal, be yourself and love others as Christ loves you.  Don’t preach the message and not live it.  People often do not listen to what we say they want to see what we will do.  Make a difference by living a holy life instead of preaching a holy life.  Let your kids see the way they should act, let your friends see that you will not collapse under pressure, let your co-workers see that you are honest and hard working no matter the circumstances or the boss, let your neighbors see that neighborly does still exist, and let the world see that you enjoy life despite your hardships.  Show them that your mark will be a positive holy light left on this sometimes dark world.

Exercise these things daily and see the difference it can make when everything else seems to crumble around you.
